Giving ourselves permission to rest from yesterday's events, we slept in until 7:00 am. We didn't get on the road until after 10:00. We backtracked back to Sheridan, then headed north toward Montana, where we hoped to find the big sky actually blue! We were tired of rain. Because rain loomed in the distance, we stopped off the freeway to change into our rainsuits. (Ah, experience is a great teacher!)

We made it through the treatening weather and stopped at Sheridan to gas up, soak up the sun, and have lunch. We found a good article in the local paper discussing how the small communities in Wyoming attract many of the Sturgis riders. As we relaxed we noticed the cutest little girl checking out the horses in a trailer. She reminded us of our Abby, complete with jewels and tiara.

A ride through this area would not be complete without a visit to the Little Big Horn Battle Site. We loved this part of the day. We had visited here before, but found the same reverence even with the noise of the many Harleys taking the ride through the park.

We reluctantly left, making our way north. We wanted to see how far toward Great Falls we could get. We stopped at a little place called Broadview (aptly named!) and took pictures of the General Mills facilities there. Notice the cloud formations in the sky. We traveled about another hour from there, and found a small motel in Harlowton. We had some good food at the restaurant next door, then settled down to watch TV and catch up on our journal. While we were watching TV we heard a tornado warning for the area of Billings, Broadview, and several of the small towns we had just passed through. We're happy we kept on moving! As we reflect on our day's journey, we are in awe of the beauty of this place. Montana certainly is "Big Sky Country." We look forward to exploring more of its beauty as we head northwest towards the mountains tomorrow. |
