Day 18 -- Gold Beach, OR To Fortuna, CA (Home)
August 21, 2005

We attended church at our favorite branch away from home, the Gold Beach Branch. We weren't the only visitors there, the congregation was more than double what it usually is. They, as usual, made us feel very welcome, leathers and all.

After church, we went back to Jot's to get some pictures now that the sun was shining. The river was a busy place this morning, lots of fish being caught.

The ride to Brookings from Gold Beach seems to get shorter and shorter each time we take it. The views of the ocean are breathtaking, some of the prettiest parts of the Oregon Coast are along this stretch of the road. We stopped in Brookings Harbour for lunch at the Hungry Clam. This place is often the destination of a day ride for us. We have anticipated this lunch for quite some time, and we savored the food and the satisfaction of realizing what we have accomplished over the past 18 days.

Today was an Art Festival at Brookings and we took a few minutes to walk about. We noticed a lucky fisherman unloading his days catch, three salmon, one was 30 lbs.

It was then on to Crescent City, where we caught a bunch of sea lions sunning themselves -- or trying to sun themselves. The Northcoast of California greeted us with foggy cold. The days of 3 digit heat in the valley and desert are just a fond memory. We were headed home, and although we were looking forward to being in our home tonight, we decided to take our time. We took the Prairie Creek turnoff, driving through someof the most beautiful country in the world. We have seen some incredible sights on this trip, but there is no other place that offers what is right here in our backyard.

Before going home, we stopped by to see our son and daughter-in-law, Jackson and Mandy, at their new home. They took great care of our place while we were gone. We have missed our friends and family very much, and it was good to see them. We arrived home late afternoon. Tomorrow we will finish unpacking, catch up with friends and family, and give the bikes a good washing and polishing. Things will return to normal, but we will always have the memories of a wonderful ride.
