Campbell River, BC to Port Hardy, BC
August 14, 2007

It will be a long ride today and we've heard that it should be a scenic one as well.   We will leave the freeway that links Campbell River to points south and head out (on what we hope will be a good two-lane road) to the town of Port Hardy at the northern tip of Vancouver Island.

I spent so much time watching the boats outside of our motel room this morning that I forgot to eat breakfast.   So along the way we stopped at a small country store for some jerky.   All I found was this package of smoked beef steak nuggets or as they say in French, pepites de biftec fumees.   It sounds better that it tastes.

The ride to Port Hardy was beautiful.   This area of Vancouver Island contains working tree farms of Douglas Fir timber and much of the road was lined with young conifers.  After a while the ride became somewhat monotonous...   and that usually means that I start taking pictures while I'm riding.

We arrived in Port Hardy in the early afternoon.   We were tired and so we decided to take some time to sit and watch the boats and cruise ships go by.  Later that afternoon, we took our time and rode around this sleepy little town.   We learned that it is sleepy only every other day because the place gets really hopping on the days that the ferry from Prince Rupert comes in.

We stopped at a deli and made a little picnic lunch to take to the nearby park.  Shirlene and I had some hot sausage and meat pies.   Afterward we strolled around the park and saw where the local curling club meets.   After our walk we rode around the local docks and watched some fishermen bring in their catch.   By then it was evening and we had to think about dinner and that meant more salmon.   Vacations in the Pacific Northwest are tough!
