Today we started on our best vacation yet. We have been planning and looking forward to this vacation for years. We know the rides will be on some familiar roads and some roads new to each of us. We look forward to this vacation being a sweet mixture of family, friends, and just the two of us enjoying the spirit of discovery on the open road.

Millie's brother, Wayne, has flown in from Utah to spend a few weeks with his sister. They should have a wonderful time together while we are away. This gives Millie a vacation away from us, and we can leave knowing she will not be alone. And this way, she can blame Wayne for any trouble they get into--much like when they were kids. They were up early to see us off.

Typically of summer mornings on the coast, we left in the cool of a misty fog. We knew this wouldn't last long as we were heading inland on Highway 36. It wasn't long until the blue sky could be seen through the redwoods. The views along 36 never get old.

We wanted to get as far as Fernley today, so we pushed ourselves, taking only quick breaks. Typically of summer afternoons on the east side of the Sierra's, we ran into high winds and rain before stopping in Sparks. The thought of the In and Out Burger in Sparks had kept us moving all day, and we were not disappointed. We settled down for the night in Fernley, tired, but happy to be on the road again.
