Day 2 started at 5:00 with a quick breakfast in the motel. We were on the road by 6:30. It was a beautiful drive heading east on 36. The terrain has changed remarkably from the Redwoods we have left behind. Now there are signs of volcanic activity as we approach Lassen National Park. The higher we climbed, the colder it became. We encountered deep drifts of snow in the park. We stopped several times to take in the views, and to take a break from the blast of cold air. |
We arrived at Susanville for a welcomed snack indoors. We noticed an outdoor temperature display and were not too surprised to see it was 41 degrees! From Susanville we turned south on Highway 395 heading for Reno. The clouds were threatening rain, but it was warming up as the day went on. We thought the ride across Nevada would be nicer, but we were fooled. We spent most of the rest of the day dodging black clouds. We could watch the storms move over the countryside, sometimes we were lucky enough to miss them, sometimes we drove right through them, experiencing snow, rain and hail. We were having far too much fun to care about being wet and cold. |
We stopped in Winnemucca, where we had planned to spend the night, but the day was young. We had lunch at the Flying Pig Barbeque, and over perfectly roasted pork sandwiches and beans, decided to move on the Elko. It would make for a long day, but the thought of hot showers and good Basque food kept us moving. One fun highlight of the trip from Winnemucca to Elko was the long tunnel east of Carlin. The sound of two sets of Vance and Hines reverberating in the tunnel was music to our ears. |
Our reward for the long journey was a splendid meal at Bil Toki in Elko. Great food, and lots of it! We'll see what tomorrow brings. We are ahead of schedule...we may make it a short ride to Wendover, or push on to Spanish Fork. It will depend on how the weather is and how we feel. |
